The survey suggested that people often “sufficed” when it came to purchasing petrol. They looked for a petrol station that was cheap enough but offered rewards points or a brand they trusted. When close to home people also tended to be more price sensitive than when in unfamiliar areas with a near empty tank.

I created a persona based on the results of the online and video surveys to help the team keep focus on what would be important when creating the app.

Instead of the usual user stories the team wanted to use job stories to emphasise the context of the tasks. I created them with the fuel gauge indicating petrol is low being the trigger. A voice app like this may have a wide range of users, and focusing on why people would use the voice app helped us focus on the main use cases.

After sample dialogue and bot personas were tested a prototype was created.
Using voice was effective when in the car and unable to use the mobile screen and also saved effort in searching through numerous petrol stations that come up in other mobile apps.
